Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is ready to make a move for Man City winger Adam Johnson following Roberto Mancini’s admission that he is ready to sell the England international.
The Anfield manager is ready to make an offer in the region of £12m for the 25 year old as he looks to continue his summer spending having already brought in Fabio Borini, Joe Allen, Oussama Assaidi from Roma, Swansea City and Heerenveen respectively. Rodgers is thought to be keen on improving his attacking options and is especially keen to improve the supply line to his strikers.
Adam Johnson has struggled to retain a spot in Man City’s first team ever since his £7m move to the Etihad Stadium on February 1st 2010. Last term the former Middlesbrough wide-man made just ten Premier League starts and was not even on the bench for their opening game of the season against Southampton.
Some sources had speculated that Johnson could be used as a makeweight as Mancini looked to tempt Liverpool into selling defender Daniel Agger but Rodgers does not wish to lose the Danish international and has therefore put in a straight cash bid for the Man City man.
Sunderland are also said to be keeping an eye on the situation but Rodgers hopes that a move to the Merseyside club will trump advances from Johnson’s hometown club.
Last summer Kenny Dalglish brought in Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson as options to play on the flanks and neither player impressed and this has led to the stepping up in the pursuit of alternative wide options. Brendan Rodgers has signed Moroccan Assaidi to help in this regard but is also after a more established option to improve his attack.
