Luka Modric Move From Tottenham To Real Madrid On The Verge Of Collapse

Luka Modric, Spurs

Mourinho furious as Levy moves goalposts over Modric fee.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had held out for a £40million offer for the Croatian midfielder, but the Spanish champions thought they had finally persuaded him to accept a package potentially worth £35million.

However, talks designed to finalise the deal on Friday apparently ended in acrimony.

Levy angered Madrid officials, including manager Jose Mourinho, by demanding an additional £2million at the last minute.

Mourinho is seemingly now ready to call the transfer off, rather than meet Tottenham’s new demands.

That would disappoint Modric, who has set his heart on a move to Real Madrid, despite interest from Chelsea and Spurs’ desire to keep him.

The absurdity continues.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has every right to demand top-dollar for Luka Modric – a world-class player with four years remaining on his contract at White Hart Lane.

But Levy’s stance is beginning to seriously damage the club. Tottenham went into the opening game of the season at Newcastle desperately short of attacking options.

Jermain Defoe did well and scored but he is unsuited to the role of lone striker and when Spurs needed a goal from the bench, 19-year-old forward Harry Kane – without a Premier League strike to his name – was all they had to call on.

Put simply, the north Londoners need at least one forward and fast, but head-coach Andre Villas-Boas seems unable to sign one until the Modric money is in the bank.

In the Croatian’s absence, Spurs are also lacking creativity in the centre of the park and would benefit from signings either Joao Moutinho or Moussa Dembele. But again, any moves for a Modric replacement are being held-up by Levy’s hardline stance.

No-one is suggesting Spurs bow to the might of Real Madric and sell the 26-year-old on the cheap but this saga has gone long enough and Levy would do well to recognise that the need to sell Modric is now greater than the need to squeeze a couple of extra million pounds out of the Spanish giants.
