Long-term injury absentee Nemanja Vidic returns for Manchester United, but four other central defenders are unavailable for selection.

Rio Ferdinand injured his groin in training, joining Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans on the sidelines.
Michael Carrick could deputise at the back while new £24m striker Robin van Persie is set to make his debut.

For Everton, midfielders Marouane Fellaini (groin strain) and Darron Gibson (thigh strain) are doubtful.

Vidic is set to return for the first time since sustaining knee ligament damage last December. It is not yet known how long

Ferdinand will be out, but scan results are expected on Monday.

Smalling is expected to miss another six weeks after surgery on a broken metatarsal, while Jones is struggling to overcome repeated back spasms.

Evans had ankle surgery in May and returned to training earlier this month, but did not take any part in the club’s pre-season matches.(BBC Sport)

Match Preview

The talk will of course all be about Man United’s new signing Robin Van Persie, who is set to make his debut for his new club, but perhaps more pressing are Sir Alex Ferguson’s defensive concerns. The fact that Michael Carrick is lining up to play alongside Nemanja Vidic at the back must be a worrying development for Sir Alex Ferguson, who may well feel he needs to invest in another centre back at this rate.

Everton have had a decent set of results against Man United, having lost only one of the last four matches against the Old Trafford side at home. David Moyes will of course also be able to point to the club’s miraculous comeback away at Man United when they forced a 4-4 draw that arguably knocked the stuffing out of the club’s title push.

Everton may well field their own striking signings, Steven Naismith and Kevin Mirallas, tonight.

Prediction

Everton 1-2 Man United
