Old Trafford side target experienced defender.
Having seen his patched up Man United defence struggle against Everton last night Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to bring in an experienced defender to boost numbers at the back. The Old Trafford boss has set his sights on AC Milan centre back Philippe Mexes as the man for the job.
The Scot is ready to launch a move to bring the French international in on a loan deal but may reportedly be ready to sign the former Roma man if a temporary deal can not be reached.
With Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all out injured Ferguson was forced to pair Nemanja Vidic and Michael Carrick at the centre of his defence as Man United slumped to an opening day defeat at Goodison Park.
Ferguson is rightfully concerned that this defensive injury crisis could derail their hopes of wrestling back their Premier League title back from local rivals City. The Man United boss is especially concerned because the one fully fit centre back he does have, Vidic, was himself only just returning from a long term absence and hadn’t started a competitive match for over eight months.
Even though AC Milan have sold star defender Thiago Silva to PSG boss Massimiliano Allegri doesn’t appear to see Mexes as part of his first team plans, with the Rossoneri boss most recently being linked with moves to use the Frenchman in a swap deal to sign Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner.
Sir Alex Ferguson is more than aware that both his senior centre backs, Ferdinand and Vidic, have had their fair share of injury issues in recent seasons and is therefore looking for another experienced option at the back as the club looks to fight on many fronts this season.
