Saints hopeful of deal for Uruguayan.
Southampton are hopeful of beating Liverpool to the signing of Uruguayan Olympic star Gaston Ramirez, reports the Evening Standard.
The move has been delayed because Ramirez’s current club Bologna are experiencing financial difficulties and must pay 30% of the 21-year-old’s reported £12m fee to his former employers – South American outfit Penarol.
The Serie A club are stalling as they seek to secure a loan against these repayments but Saints are determined to complete a deal, after beating off competition from Liverpool and Spurs.
Last week, Ramirez, who has 9 senior caps for Uruguay, admitted his desire to join Nigel Adkins’ side.
“The English club has reached an agreement with me, it is the classic offer that you cannot refuse for my life as a whole and my family,” he said.
“But they believe in me in every way, I will be essential and above all they are going to grow.
“Southampton are a newly promoted team in the English top flight but they will become a big team in years to come.”
