Old Trafford side set to say goodbye to record signing.
Fiorentina are in talks with Manchester United over a £3 million move for Dimitar Berbatov – a deal that could hold the key to Manchester City’s pursuit of Stevan Jovetic.
The Italian side want to sign Berbatov as a replacement for Jovetic, who Goal.com revealed on Tuesday is close to a switch to City, with the clubs in advanced talks over a £23.6m deal.
Whilst the act of selling unhappy forward Dimitar Berbatov could possibly assist local rivals Man City, it’s a move that Sir Alex Ferguson would be wise to allow. Whilst the Old Trafford boss may well be after a far bigger sum for the Bulgarian international it is worth noting that any interested party could pick up the former Tottenham man on a free transfer in a year’s time.
The 31 year old is seemingly desperate to leave Man United having seen his first team chances become increasingly limited over the past year, and further diminished by the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal.
Whilst some may consider the £30.75m paid for Berbatov to have been something of a waste the statistics bare out a different story. Whilst hardly prolific in his first two seasons confusingly when the stylish forward did start scoring regularly, such as his return of 21 goals from 24 Premier League starts in 2010/11, he was dropped for the Champions League final with Barcelona and much of the following campaign.
A move to Italy may well help to reignite a career that has stagnated on the Man United bench.
