Old Trafford boss looks to nab White Hart Lane playmaker.

Man United are reportedly considering making a surprise bid for Tottenham midfiedler Rafael Van der Vaart as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to bring in a creative addition to his Old Trafford squad. The Scot has been linked with a number of creative midfield targets but as yet have not succeeded in making such an addition.

Ferguson made strong advances for Brazilian teenager Lucas Moura but lost out to PSG as the French side made a superior offer to the Premier League side. Now the Man United boss will look to make an offer to tempt Tottenham into selling their Dutch international.

Van der Vaart has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane all summer, with growing speculation about a return to the Bundesliga for the 29 year old former Hamburg man.

The talented playmaker may be forced out from his North London side following the arrival of Gylfi Sigurdsson, a move that led to Van der Vaart being left on the bench for Tottenham’s opening day defeat to Newcastle United.

Man United were strongly linked with a move for Van der Vaart prior to his move from Hamburg to Real Madrid and now Sir Alex Ferguson will look to finally snap up the goal-scoring midfielder.

Ferguson fears that his midfield is too rigid and has earmarked a move for the Tottenham man to add support and guile to his first team set-up. With Paul Scholes nearing the end of his glittering career and Michael Carrick arguably not offering as much of a cutting edge as he once was known for, the signing of Van der Vaart would add more of a goal-threat and a natural link between midfield and attack.

The Man United manager is hoping that youngster Tom Cleverley will grow into the role but is yet to make an impact and Ferguson may see Van der Vaart as a short to mid-term solution to this lack of midfield creativity.

Shinji Kagawa is a more advanced attacking weapon and Ferguson’s advances to sign Lucas Moura came long after the Japanese international had signed for Man United, thus proving that the veteran manager is very much still looking for an addition of this type.

Van der Vaart has been a consistent performer since his £8m move to Tottenham, netting 24 goals in 56 Premier League starts for the North London side.
