Jones and Defoe not coming to Villa Park.
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert says he still wants to sign a striker but has ruled out moves for Stoke’s Kenwyne Jones and Jermain Defoe of Tottenham, reports Sky Sports.
Lambert admitted last week but he’d love to bring either player to Villa Park, with the Scot keen to land some addition firepower before the 31 August transfer deadline.
Jones spent time with current Villa hit-man Darren Bent at Sunderland, while Defoe is potentially available with Spurs closing in on Brazilian Leandro Damiao.
Lambert, however, has inisted that neither player is an option but has not ruled out the possibility of signing a forward.
“They are two top, top players, those lads. But that’s not going to happen here,” he said.
“I have seen the rumours linking us with some players but a lot of them aren’t going to happen.
“I have never stopped looking. Someone might come in.
“We’ll have to wait and see. You can never be quite sure until someone walks through the door and they are actually here.
“It’s difficult because of the prices and that’s a hard thing. I think it’s well documented the type of players I’m looking for.
“They have to want to succeed and be hungry to do it. That’s another issue you have to deal with. If they tick those boxes than we will have a look at them.”
