Sunderland had already secured a deal to snap up Wolves striker Steven Fletcher and Martin O’Neill’s second capture of the day is a real statement of intent by the Black Cats.
Adam Johnson has struggled to retain a spot in Man City’s first team ever since his £7m move to the Etihad Stadium on February 1st 2010. Last term the former Middlesbrough wide-man made just ten Premier League starts and was not even on the bench for their opening game of the season against Southampton.
It seems likely that Sunderland would have had to have made a salary offer to the 25 year old that would’ve come close to that he was receiving at the Etihad Stadium.
Johnson may well have decided that remaining at Man City would not have served his career much good in the long run, his place in the England set-up had already been under threat after Roy Hodgson opted to not name the talented wide-man in his Euro 2012 squad.
Perhaps the allure of a move to his hometown club was also a factor and the chance to play regular first team football will have played a crucial part in his decision to leave the Premier League title holders for the Stadium of Light.
