As Sir Alex Ferguson announces his summer spending is over we take a closer look at the five players the Old Trafford boss has signed this summer.
Shinji Kagawa: £12m (rising to £16m) from Borussia Dortmund
The signing of the Japanese international came early on in the transfer window and Sir Alex Ferguson certainly saw off competition from a host of interested parties to land the Borussia Dortmund man. The 23 year old had experienced great success during his time in Germany, notching up back to back Bundesliga titles in his two seasons at the club and a lot is expected of him at Old Trafford.
At Borussia Dortmund Kagawa was used in a variety of attacking roles but most commonly placed by boss Jurgen Klopp in the hole behind the main striker, usually Polish international Robert Lewandowski. In two seasons he racked up 29 goals in all competitions.
His Premier League debut may have come during a defeat at Goodison Park but the young attacker still showed great promise. Kagawa’s quick intelligent distribution was there for all to see and Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking to the Kobe born attacker to form a partnership with Wayne Rooney, and perhaps another forward in what may turn out to be a three pronged attack, though perhaps such a combative formation would be more likely to be adopted in home fixtures.
The fee paid for Kagawa in today’s transfer market represents a very good bit of business by Sir Alex Ferguson and he may well be a key player in seasons to come.
