Spurs ready to bid for US star.
Tottenham are preparing a bid for unhappy Fulham forward Clint Dempsey, who is wanted by Liverpool.
Dempsey, 29, has been linked with a move to Anfield for over a month but the Merseysiders are yet to lodge an official bid, leaving Cottagers boss Martin Jol frustrated.
The US international is desperate to leave the west London club and has reportedly refused to play for Fulham again, forcing Jol to leave him out of their opening two league games against Norwich and Manchester United.
Spurs head-coach Andre Villas-Boas has been frustrated in his attempts to sign attacking reinforcements this summer, with the club failing in bids for Brazilian duo Willian of Shakhtar and Leandro Damiao of Internacional.
The Portuguese has concerns over the fitness of Rafa van der Vaart and believes Dempsey, who has scored 30 league goals in the past two seasons, can provide competition for the Dutchman.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reluctant to meet Fulham’s £10m asking price for Dempsey but is hopeful of structuring a deal in installments, after receiving a £33m injection from Luka Modric’s sale to Real Madrid.
Dempsey is open to a move to either Spurs or Liverpool and a switch to White Hart Lane would allow the American to remain in London, where he is settled.
