Gunners join race for Dutchman.
Arsenal are monitoring Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel, according to Dutch newspaper AD.
The 24-year-old is keen for a move abroad after four seasons as a first-team regular at the Amsterdam club, and both Newcastle and Chelsea have been credited with holding an interest in him in recent months, but the north London club appear to have emerged as front-runners for his signature.
Regular Gunners right-back Bacary Sagna is still sidelined with a broken leg, and manager Arsene Wenger is thought to be keen to bring in defensive reinforcements.
However, Richard Law, an executive at Arsenal who is responsible for player contracts, was coy when quizzed on whether his side were preparing an offer for the Holland international.
When asked about a move for van der Wiel, Law said: “I cannot confirm or deny. We never make announcements on transfer issues.”
Arsenal have reportedly joined the race for Netherlands international Gregory van der Wiel.
The 24-year-old has been the subject of intense speculation linking him with a move to Premier League for well over a year and his future could finally be resolve before the August 31 transfer deadline.
Last summer Chelsea were thought to the be tracking the flying right-back but the signing of Cesar Azpilicueta from Marseille has ended the Blues’ interest.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are also thought to be interested in van der Wiel, as their move for top target Mathieu Debuchy stalls.
With Bacary Sagna still sidelined with a broken lega and youngster Carl Jenkinson filling in, Arsenal may yet be the club to land the Ajax man.
The Ducthman loves to get forward and would fit boss Arsene Wenger’s attacking philosophy. He might also be able to provide cover on the right wing, particularly with rumours circulating that contract-rebel Theo Walcott could be sold before the end of the month.
