City to match Brazilian’s wages but yet to agree a fee with Inter.
Manchester City are close to completing a £5.5m deal for Internazionale right-back Maicon, reports Goal.com.
The Brazilian is set to leave the San Siro this summer after admitting last month that he is keen for a fresh challenge.
City boss Roberto Mancini has been tracking the 31-year-old, who he signed for Inter when he managed the club, for some time and has stepped up his attempts to sign him after learning that Micah Richards faces over a month on the sidelines.
City are reportedly ready to match Maicon’s £100,000 per-week wages but have so far offered only £4m, with Inter holding out for £5.5. It is thought that both clubs are confident of reaching a compromise, however.
Maicon has also been linked with Chelsea and Real Madrid but both have since turned their attentions to other targets, with the Blues landing Cesar Azpilicueta and Real now chasing Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy.
Mancini has publicly denied interest in Maicon, saying only: “He is an Inter player”.
But it is thought the Italian’s stance is only out of respect for his former employer. Maicon was left out of Inter’s squad for their Serie A opener against Pescara, suggesting a move to the Premier League Champions could be imminent.
