Enforcer opts for Bundesliga giants.
Manchester City and Barcelona have missed out on the signing of midfielder Javi Martinez, who is set to join Bayern Munich in a £31m deal, reports insidefutbol.com.
The Athletic Bilbao enforcer has been the subject of interest from both City and Barca this summer but Bayern are set to seal the deal after activating the 23-year-old’s release clause.
Martinez was pictured in Bayern’s head offices in Munich this week and has not travelled to Finland with his Bilbao teammates for Athletic’s Europa League qualifier against HJK Helsinki on Thursday.
Having lost two successive Bundesliga titles to Dortmund, Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes was keen to improve his side this summer and made the Spain international, who can play in defence or midfield, his top target.
Premier League Champions Man City have also been tracking Martinez but opted for Everton’s Jack Rodwell, who – at £12m – cost under half of what Bayern are set to pay for the Spaniard.
Barca have also held a long-standing interest in the youngster but turned to £15m Alex Song after learning of Bilbao’s demands.
