Liverpool make move for Fulham frontman.Liverpool have revived their move for Clint Dempsey by opening fresh talks with Fulham over a deal worth £7 million, Goal.com can reveal.
The Merseysiders are back in negotiations with the Londoners, with discussions centering on the players who could move to Craven Cottage in part-exchange.
Liverpool are reluctant to meet Fulham’s asking price for the 29-year-old even though the Londoners will settle for a fee of around £6-7m.
Sources have said that discussions have focused on the identity of the players that could be used as makeweights in the deal in order to meet Fulham’s valuation.
Manager Martin Jol is in the market for a central midfielder after selling Mousa Dembele and Danny Murphy this summer, prompting Fulham to enquire again about Charlie Adam but it is understood that he is reluctant to move down south.
In one of the summer’s most talked about moves, Dempsey looks finally set to get his wish by making the move to Liverpool from the capital.
After isolating himself at the Cottagers training ground in a bid to force a move away from the South-West London outfit, much to the dismay of Fulham boss Martin Jol, Fulham will not block the late advances of Liverpool and will hope a deal can be reached for Dempsey before the transfer window closes at midnight on Friday.
Though the Fulham faithful will be sad to see the American, voted ‘Player of the Season’ in July for the second consecutive year, depart the club, Dempsey has acted petulantly and unprofessionally, and left the club with little option but to sell him.
It remains to be seen whether Dempsey will be able to quickly recapture the goalscoring form he showed last season – when he bagged 23 goals – should the deal to Liverpool go through, given that he is badly lacking match fitness after refusing to make himself available for selection for Fulham’s first three games of the new season.
While it appears new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is willing to gamble on Dempsey being able to slot straight into his team at Anfield, with him eager to secure the services of the American in place of Andy Carroll, who Rodgers considers surplus to requirements, there could yet be another twist in this saga as Carroll’s determination to stay and fight for his place at Liverpool could prove to scupper this deal being completed before the deadline.
