Spurs in eleventh hour bid for US star.
Tottenham have made late bid for Fulham forward Clint Dempsey, who is negotiating with Liverpool, reports Sky Sports.
US international Dempsey looks almost certain to leave Craven Cottage before the transfer deadline at midnight on Friday, after refusing to play for the west London club again. The 29-year-old has missed Fulham’s opening three matches of the new season.
Liverpool have been linked with Dempsey all summer and had appeared favourites to land the forward, after he rejected a move to Aston Villa on Friday morning.
But Tottenham are set to make a late challenge for Dempsey’s signature after learning that the Reds are yet to agree a feee with Fulham.
Spurs sold Rafa van der Vaart to Hamburg on Friday and Dempsey, who scored 23 goals in 46 appearances last season, plays a similar role to the Dutchman – behind the striker.
Tottenham’s £7m bid for Dempsey suggests that their club record move for Porto Joao Moutinho may have stalled. Spurs agreed a £22m fee with the Portuguese club but some reports have suggested the north Londoners are struggling to agree personal terms with the 25-year-old.
