Legend to move Down Under.
Italian veteran Alessandro Del Piero is set to join Sydney FC after rebuffing late interest from Premier League new-boys Southampton.
The 37-year-old is understood to have shaken hands on a move Down Under and he is expected to sign in the next 24 hours.
Del Piero left Juventus in May after 19 successful years with the Old Lady. The cultured left-footer had looked set to join Sydney last week but the move stalled, giving fresh hope to Saints and Swiss outfit Sion.
But, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, Del Piero’s representative Lou Sticca met Sky Blues chief executive Tony Pignata on Monday and a six-month contract is now set to be rubber stamped by the player and Sydney chairman Scott Barlow.
The venture is expected to cost Sydney a whopping £1.26m for just half a year and the club is already thinking of ways to maximise venue, including by planning some lucrative friendlies with some of Europe’s top clubs.
