Juventus keen on Spanish goal-machine.
Juventus hope to sign Arsenal and Liverpool target Fernando Llorente in January, according to reports in Italy.
Llorente was expected to leave Athletic Bilbao in the summer after a contract dispute, but no club agreed to meet the Spanish outfit’s £28m asking price.
But that has not deterred Juventus, who are encouraged by the fact Llorente has not played for Bilbao this season after failing to patch up his differences with the club.
And after Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho claimed the striker will be playing for the Italian champions in January, Juventus Director General Giuseppe Marotta confirmed his side’s interest.
He told Tuttosport: “Mourinho says that Llorente will play for Juventus in January? Well, he’s generally very well informed, of course.
“He’s a player we are interested in. We’ll see if he’s still on the market in the winter.”
We knew Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho was well-connected but how on earth does he know where Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente will be playing next year?
Anyhow, it seems likely that Serie A Champions Juventus will move for the talented Spaniard in January.
Llorente is desperate to leave the Basque club to play Champions League football and, given he has just 11 months remaining on his current deal, it was somewhat surprising that he didn’t seal a late move during the summer transfer window – with Juve, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs all interested.
Llorente’s relationship with Bilbao seems to have broken down irrevocably and the club must now cash-in in January or risk losing the Spanish international for nothing next summer.
Turin looks his most likely destination, with the Premier League all slightly strapped for cash and unwilling to pay big wages at present, but the Old Lady, for all the speculation, are yet to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to transfers.
Juve were linked with glamorous swoops for Premier League strikers Robin van Persie, Edin Dzeko, Luis Suarez and Dimitar Berbatov over the summer and ended up with Nicklas Bendtner on loan from Arsenal…
If that trend continues, Llorente could well move to England (with Juve landing, say, Marouane Chamakh on loan instead).
