White Hart Lane boss believes deal is dead.
Andre Villas-Boas has ruled out a January move for Joao Moutinho.
The Tottenham manager was desperate to land the midfielder in the summer and got as far as agreeing a fee with Porto.
But the Spurs manager reckons the deal is dead.
“We set our sights on that player at the end of the transfer window but we couldn’t conclude the deal,” AVB said.
“It’s not likely that we will go back in January. Generally the market is very difficult and very expensive, and it’s highly unlikely that we will continue to pursue that transfer because by then we will have [Scott] Parker coming back, and he’s a player we want to come back as soon as possible.
“He was a player of maximum importance for this club last season and we feel that he can add so much to the squad that we are waiting for the moment when he can come back, so it’s a question we have to reassess at that time.”
It is perhaps no big surprise that Andre Villas-Boas would seemingly give in on signing Joao Moutinho. The White Hart Lane boss chased a number of targets and did bring in some quality late additions to his Tottenham squad and may feel that he has enough players to give his North London side good strength in depth.
In the last three days of the transfer window Tottenham brought in Moussa Dembele and Clint Dempsey, as well as keeper Hugo Lloris, and a move to sign the 26 year old Portuguese international just seemed to run out of steam, despite the fact that Villas-Boas was ready to fork out £22m for his services.
However Villas-Boas could be performing a double bluff designed to scare FC Porto into considering a lesser offer, as the former Chelsea boss may well still harbour intentions of reuniting with his former Estadio do Dragao charge.
We have probably not heard the last of this one.
