Etihad Stadium side keen on Nou Camp youngsters.
Ferran Soriano, the new Manchester City chief executive, is planning a triple raid on former club Barcelona, according to sources in Spain.
Soriano, who spent five years at the Nou Camp between 2003 and 2008, ended City’s 11-month search for a chief executive when he arrived at the club in August.
Despite his knowledge of Barcelona and close relationship with certain players, Sorriano is aware that it will be tough trying to sign some of the Spanish side’s top stars, including Lionel Messi, and he has instead set his sights on luring some of the club’s brightest young prospects to the Etihad Stadium.
City are believed to have targeted Cristian Tello, who was linked with Liverpool earlier this summer, midfielder Sergi Roberto and winger Gerard Deulofeu.
It does appear that Man City have changed their transfer policy just a tad. Whilst Roberto Mancini still invested large sums in the summer transfer window the Italian certainly didn’t hit the heights of other windows and there was certainly a move towards bringing in more youthful additions and the push to build a new £200m training and academy complex further displays the Premier League title holders move to plan for the future.
Moves to lure this Barcelona trio may well prove tricky but will certainly be a more cost effective approach than looking to bring in established ‘ready-to-use’ talent.
Of the three players mentioned Cristian Tello is certainly the one most advanced in the Nou Camp first team picture, with the young attacker netting seven goals in 22 appearances last term, most of which them coming from the bench.
The 21 year old had been linked with a move away from the Catalan side but appeared to have been given assurances from new boss Tito Vilanova that he was part of his plans so he could well prove tough to lure to Man City.
Central midfielder Sergi Roberto has made just two La Liga appearances and could well struggle to force his way past the myriad of players ahead of him in the Barcelona pecking order. Gerard Deulofeu is the youngest of the trio and at just 18 has barely got his Barcelona career into gear but has impressed in the club’s B team and is already a member of Spain’s Under 21 international set-up.
