North-East rivals keen on AZ teenager.
Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has joined Newcastle United in the chase for teenage Dutch sensation Adam Maher.
But the Tyne-Wear rivals know they will face strong competition for the 19-year-old AZ Alkmaar attacking midfielder as a host of top clubs are also on his trail.
Maher, who has opted to play for Holland, is expected to leave for the Premier League either in January or next summer.

Moroccan born Dutch international teenager Maher has become a much sought after property and AZ will struggle to keep the 19 year old much longer.
Last term the young midfielder made a real impact in the Eredivisie and became a hugely important player in Gertjan Verbeek’s first team picture, racking up 52 appearances in all competitions and helping AZ to the Europa League Quarter-Finals.
Martin O’Neill made significant moves in the tail end of the summer transfer window, forking out big sums for Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson to help beef up the Black Cats attack but the Sunderland boss may be looking for some extra midfield guile.
Alan Pardew had a fairly sedate time of it during the transfer window and it seemed far more crucial to keep hold of his star turns than in investing in big new additions. The Magpies boss is seemingly a big fan of Maher’s though and it will be interesting to see if either North-East side makes a bid for the youngster in January.
