Arsenal have been linked with interest in Montpellier’s 23 year old captain for some time and now that the French international is in the final year of his contract a move away from the Ligue 1 title holders is looking more and more likely. Arsene Wenger is said to be an admirer of the adaptable defender who can play across the back four.
Yanga-Mbiwa is most often used as a centre back and has this year forced his way into Didier Deschamps French national team set-up starting both their recent 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Belarus.
Some sources suggest that Arsenal are close to agreeing a pre-contract deal with the talented defender and Montpellier may well opt to sell the one club man in January to avoid losing his services for nothing next summer.
Wenger may be keen on using Yanga-Mbiwa in a full-back role as this is an area he has seen his squad struggle with over the past 18 months. The likes of Bacary Sagna, Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs and Andre Santos all spent time on the sidelines with injury leaving the Gunners boss having to use makeshift options to fill the spots on both flanks.
Arsenal have of course done business with Montpellier in recent months, landing the club’s top marksman Olivier Giroud in the summer in a £10.9m deal.
Yanga-Mbiwa has made 190 appearances for Montpellier and has been a virtual ever present at the Stade de la Mosson for the past five seasons.
