Lumbering striker to join A-League club.
Former Liverpool and England striker Emile Heskey is set to sign for Australian outfit Newcastle Jets, reports US network Fox.
The lumbering forward was released by Aston Villa in May and has been searching for a new club all summer.
Heskey is now set to join the A-League side and could make his debut in an all-English strike partnership with former Leeds player Michael Bridges.
To make things even more spicy, the 32-year-old’s first game for the Jets could be against Sydney FC, who will be handing a debut to Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero.
Jets CEO Robbie Middleby and Troy Palmer, CEO of the Hunter Sports Group that owns the club, met with Heskey this week and are close to finalising a one-year contract for the former Leicester City man.
Heskey has 62 England caps and represented the Three Lions at three World Cups, including two years ago in South Africa.
The Jets declined to comment on the speculation on Monday, citing the club’s policy of “not speculating about player movement through the media”.
Football Federation Australia has to sanction any marquee arrival but FFA sources have reportedly confirmed this will be a formality.
Heskey, 34, has been training with another former club, Wigan, in the off-season and recently hinted that he was still keen to find a new club in the UK.
“I feel as fit and hungry as I have done in a long time and have been training everyday throughout the summer,” Heskey said.
“As has been reported, I did receive a number of offers during the transfer window but didn’t feel like any of them were the right opportunity for me at that time.”
