Chelsea target Oscar Cardozo is set to sign a new deal with Benfica, all but ending the chances of a switch to the Premier League.
The European Champions are on a long list of English clubs who have been tracking the free-scoring striker over the past two years.
But he has so far stayed put at Benfica, where he has struck 78 times in 109 League outings.
And, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Cardozo, 29, is set to commit his future to the club once again by signing a new deal.
His current contract expires in less than a year and it has been suggested that Europe’s top clubs are waiting in the wings to nick him on a free next summer.
But he is now poised to pen a contract which will keep him at the club until at least 2015, by which point he’ll be 32.
Chelsea have missed out another top striking target, with Benfica’s Oscar Cardoza set to remain at the Portuguese club after agreeing to a new contract.
The Blues number one target was believed to be another South American playing in Portugal, Brazilian powerhouse Hulk, but the beastly left-footer joined Zenit St Petersburg for big money earlier this month.
The European Champions remain light up-front, with just Daniel Sturridge as backup to Fernando Torres at present. Boss Roberto Di Matteo was understood to be an admirer of Cardozo, whose record at Benfica speaks for itself, but will now have to look elsewhere for a forward.
It is understood that Chelsea could turn to either Loic Remy of Marseille or Fernando Llorente of Athletic Bilbao, while Radamel Falcao, their Super Cup tormentor, could also be a viable option depsite his hefty price-tag.
