Merseyside club looking to Spain for long-term quality replacement for stalwart Gerrard.
Liverpool have turned their attentions to La Liga as they seek to sign a long-term quality replacement for Steven Gerrard, with Isco and Ander Herrera top of their list.
Gerrard is now 32 and new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is looking to the future in terms of who he hopes can come in and replicate the key role played by the fan-favourite over the past 14 years.
Malaga ace Isco, who has 5 Spain U23 caps to his name, is a player who has drawn much attention from a number of Europe’s top clubs and the attacking midfielder was heavily linked with Tottenham during the summer before they opted for Mousa Dembele.
Despite a buy-out which was initially followed by a huge injection of cash into the club in 2010, the money has begun to dry-up at Malaga; the recent summer transfer window saw them offload a number of players, including Santi Cazorla to Arsenal, and bring in no-one new in an effort to balance the wage-books.
Consequently, the Spanish side would be willing to let Isco leave should Liverpool make a move for him, though it is likely they will need to part with at least £20m to get their man.
Isco starred as Malaga beat Zenit 3-0 in their opening Champions League Group C game with two quality strikes either side of Javier Saviola’s slotted goal and his performance will certainly have encouraged those at Liverpool that he could be the man to initially ease the heavy burden on Gerrard and eventually take over from the England man, according to talkSPORT.
Athletic Club midfielder Ander Herrara is considered another possibility by Rodgers and Liverpool already made an approach for him in the summer with an offer of around 20m Euros, but the player opted to remain in Spain.
At 23-years-of-age he also has 5 caps for Spain U23’s, to go with his 32 first-team appearances for Bilbao since moving there from Zaragoza in 2011 and Liverpool have continued to monitor him, believing he has the desired potential and would be willing to move to the Premier League next summer.
While it would appear to most that the acquisition of a new striker should be at the top of Liverpool’s priority list come the transfer window, Rodgers wants to bring in the player he sees as the future of the club swiftly so as to ensure the new-boy is given as much playing time in the Premier League alongside Gerrard as possible.
