Upton Park side keen on Old Trafford veteran.
West Ham are reportedly considering lining up an audacious January move for former defender Rio Ferdinand. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was linked with a number of high-profile moves over the summer but is now set to mount his biggest yet and the Upton Park boss may feel he has a chance to lure the England international back to East London given that Man United have yet to offer the veteran centre-back a new contract.
The 33 year old Old Trafford star is in the last year of his contract and could therefore leave Man United on a free transfer next summer and therefore any offer for Ferdinand’s services in January may well be considered.
The success of such a bid depends greatly on two factors. Firstly Sir Alex Ferguson has injury concerns over a number of defenders in his Man United squad. Currently youngsters Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are both sidelined and Nemanja Vidic is set for two months out after surgery on his knee.
This has led to Rio Ferdinand playing a more significant part in first team affairs than Ferguson may have planned. The second factor relates to whether the former West Ham and Leeds United man would be interested in a move back to his first club, which may well be a romantic notion but could perhaps fall below the goals he may have set himself for the latter stages of his glittering career.
There has been much speculation about a possible move Stateside on the completion of Ferdinand’s Man United career but the Peckham born defender may well feel he still has the ability to make an impact in the English top tier and could put the idea of an MLS move on the back burner for a year or two.
There is no doubting that Ferdinand’s role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s first team set-up is diminishing as the Scot looks to plan for the future, and therefore a move to West Ham could be tempting.
Ferdinand represented West Ham from the age of 14 and racked up 146 appearances for the club before Leeds United paid a mammoth £18m back in 2000 for the centre back but accepted a whopping £30m a year later.
Rio Ferdinand has made over 400 appearances for Man United over the past decade and won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a Champions League winners medal in the process.
