Stamford Bridge side want Emirates Stadium attacker.
Chelsea are lining up a January bid for Arsenal winger Theo Walcott. The 23 year old wide-man has been locked in contract talks with his North London club but is steadfastly sticking to his guns in relation to demands concerning both salary and the position he occupies in Arsene Wenger’s side.
The former Southampton man wants to move into a more orthodox striking role but as yet has no seen his wishes put into action and Arsenal are unwilling to meet his reported £100k a week wage demand. However Chelsea are ready to meet both Walcott’s requests and are said to be lining up a bid in the region of £12m for the England international.
Arsenal may well be ready to accept just such an offer given that Walcott has only started one Premier League match thus far this term and doesn’t appear to have been missed. Wenger can call upon a number of wide-options with the likes of Gervinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski more than able to make an impact on the wings.
Arsene Wenger also has Andrei Arshavin to call upon and the up and coming Japanese international Ryo Miyaichi, currently on loan at Wigan, part of the French boss’s long term plans.
Walcott has been an inconsistent performer for much of his six and half year spell at the Emirates Stadium but is nonetheless a player Chelsea are very keen on landing.
Roberto Di Matteo believes that Walcott could work well as a striker in his Chelsea squad and given that the Blues boss has just ineffective forward Fernando Torres and England attacker Daniel Sturridge to call upon, with Romelu Lukaku on loan at West Brom, a move for the Arsenal man makes a great deal of good sense.
Chelsea have more than enough wingers on their books and would bring the Gunners contract rebel in to help beef up their striking options.
Arsenal do not appear to have any qualms about selling their players to Premier League rivals, just ask Man City, and may feel that a £12m return on a player who could leave for nothing next summer as too good a deal to turn down.
