German source 4-4-2 claim that Man United are among a throng of clubs keen on Japanese international Hideto Takahashi.

The adaptable player, who Sport Witness report can play in a central defensive role as well as in the centre of the midfield, is also the subject of much interest in Germany with Bundesliga pair Hamburg and Borussia Monchengladbach kee on the 24 year old.

Man United could certainly do with a defensive midfield presence in their midfield but one wonders if Hideto Takahashi is a player of sufficient quality for the job. Sir Alex Ferguson may be scouting the FC Toyko player with a view to a squad player role.

Arguably Man United have not had the services of an out and out ‘enforcer’ style dedicated defensively minded midfield since the early stages of Owen Hargreaves injury plagued spell at Old Trafford.

Though the likes of Anderson and indeed veteran Paul Scholes, both offer a steely edge to their games they could not be classed as true defensive midfielders, a player who’s sole purpose is to break down opposition advances. Is Takahashi a player who could be considered for such a role?

The fact that the tough tackling Japanese player can also double as a centre back may appeal to the Scot though given the injury issues he is suffering in that department and new signing Shinji Kagawa may well be able to offer advice as to the suitability of a move for his national team compatriot.
