Redknapp tried to land Cazorla.
Harry Redknapp says he was keen to sign Arsenal new boy Santi Cazorla while he was in charge at Tottenham.
The Spaniard has made an impressive start at Arsenal following his £12million arrival from Malaga in the summer.
But Redknapp says it could have been very different for the 27-year-old, who he has revealed was his number one transfer target during his time at Tottenham.
“He first really caught my eye a couple of years ago in a pre-season game, when he was still with Villarreal,” Redknapp said.
“They came to Tottenham for a pre-season game and he absolutely ran the show — he was fantastic.
“I really wanted him at White Hart Lane after that and he was always top of my list to bring to Spurs, but we never managed it.”
It must be sickening for Spurs fans to learn that the club tried and failed to land current Arsenal star Santi Cazorla – particularly because Tottenham’s interest in the Spaniard pre-dates their fierce rival’s.
The Lilywhites were keen to sign Cazorla last summer, when he was still with Villareal but the playmaker opted to join mega-rich Malaga instead, before a financial crisis led to his move to Arsenal.
Cazorla has taken the the Premier League seamlessly, running Arsenal’s midfield alongside compatriot Mikel Arteta. While the silky pass-master could have been lining-up next to Luka Modric last season, he now has the opportunity to form an equally mouthwatering partnership with Jack Wilshere.
The England man is returning to fitness after a long-spell on the sidelines and, with Abou Diaby again injured, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger might be tempted to throw Wilshere into the action alongside Cazorla sooner rather than later.
The pair promise to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing central midfield duos in the Premier League and it will be some ask trying to win back to ball once Arsenal have it.
