Strootman staying at PSV…for now.
PSV will hold firm and keep Manchester United target Kevin Strootman this January – although the club face a battle to hold on to him next summer.
Holland international Strootman was firmly on United’s radar in the summer but Sir Alex Ferguson could not sort out a move.
It was understood that Strootman was keen to leave but PSV rejected any overtures.
However, the Dutch giants are mindful of interest in the midfielder – from AC Milan as well as United – and are already drawing up plans to replace him.
His agent Chiel Dekker recently ramped up the speculation by claiming the 22-year-old could leave in January but it appears that is not the case.
PSV want to keep one of their most important players for the entirety of the season as they fight for the Eredivisie as well as the Europa League.
Strootman is central to their plans and he has a contract until 2016, which means his club can play hard-ball when it comes to discussing a potential fee.
That will not happen until the summer in any case, with PSV adamant they will not listen to any offers when the winter window opens.
PSV have ruled out a January exit for Manchester United target Kevin Strootman but the Dutch giants may be powerless to prevent the 22-year-old leaving for Old Trafford next summer.
Strootman is one of the most highly thought of young players in the Eredivisie and is already a regular in the Netherlands squad, picking up 11 caps since his debut in February 2011 despite fierce competition for centre midfield places.
The former Utrecht midfielder only joined PSV in summer 2011 but he would be the perfect fit for United. With Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in their late thirties and doubts remaining over the fitness of Darren Fletcher, the Old Trafford club desperately need midfield reinforcements.
Strootman is able to sit in front of the back four and doesn’t shy away from a tackle but is probably more comfortable further up the pitch, where he can use his vision to unlock opposition defences.
The young Dutchman would fit in well at United and the Red Devils would surely be willing to pay the £15m or so that PSV are likely to demand.
