Loftus Road and St Mary’s sides in race to sign White Hart Lane
Southampton hope Tottenham and England centre-half Michael Dawson is the man to fix the Premier League’s worst defence.
Dawson has been told he is not part of manager Andre Villas-Boas’ plans at Spurs, and is free to leave in the January transfer window.
Saints have conceded a worrying 24 goals in just eight Premier League matches – setting a new eight-game record for the Prem era – and boss Nigel Adkins is keen to boost his paper-thin defence with a £7.5million move for Dawson.

Southampton’s need for defensive solidity is clear for all to see but Michael Dawson may well prefer a move to West London to QPR despite the fact that Mark Hughes’s side are sitting bottom of the pile.
The 28 year old was close to moving to Loftus Road over the summer but Andre Villas-Boas managed to convince the England international that he had a part to play in the Tottenham defence but that hasn’t proved the case.
Dawson has played just one minute of Premier League football this term and seen youngster Steven Caulker jump ahead of him in the Tottenham defensive pecking order and a move away from White Hart Lane does look increasingly likely.
Southampton desperately need a steady defender to help prevent the Saint from continuing to ship goals with alarming regularity but Dawson seems unlikely to consider such a move over a switch to QPR.
