Emirates Stadium side ready to take advantage of Ligue 1 side’s financial plight?
Inside Futbol have linked Arsenal with a possible move for long term Arsene Wenger target Yoann Gourcuff after the Ligue 1 side’s president Jean-Michel Aulas admitted he would have to sell a number of players to balance books.
The club’s accounts showed a shortfall of 28 million euros ($36.2 million) in June this year and Aulas said they will need to part company with some more star names to wipe out the defecit.
“We have plans to sell three players, two in the winter transfer window and one next summer, for 30 million euros ($38.6 million). That will also cut our playing staff and the wage bill. Negotiations are already well under way, but they cannot be finalised until the end of the window,”
Lyon must be in serious financial hardship as the Stade Gerland side made a decent sum from the sales of Hugo Lloris, Aly Cissokho and Kim Källström to Tottenham, Valencia and Spartak Moscow respectively.
Though French midfielder Gourcuff is perhaps not the same player he once was, his career blighted by injury and poor patches of form, at 26 years of age the former Bordeaux man still has a lot to offer and the temptation to pick up a long term target for a reduced price may be too much for Wenger to resist.
One issue with such a move could be the fact that Arsenal do possess a number of players of a similar style to the attacking midfielder, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky to name two and arguably Jack Wilshere performs in the same type of role, however given the injuries this very trio have suffered over the past 18 months perhaps it’s still worth making a move for the one time AC Milan man.
