Old Trafford side line up move for Athletic Bilbao teenager.
Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to re-ignite his interest in Athletic Bilbao youngster Iker Muniain. The Man United boss has been tracking the teenage attacker ever since his side came up against the Basque side in last season’s Europa League tie, a tie which the La Liga side won with ease.
The Scot has been paying close attention to manner in which the San Mames side is beginning to unravel. Boss Marcelo Bielsa has had various run-ins with the club’s board and midfielder Javi Martinez was sold to Bayern Munich whilst giant forward Fernando Llorente steadfastly refuses to sign a new contract.
This coupled with the club’s woeful start to the campaign, eight points from eight games leaving Athletic in 17th spot just about the relegation zone, may give Ferguson hope that he can lure the talented Spanish international starlet into a move to Old Trafford.
The pint sized Pamplona born forward can play across the attack and has already amassed over 100 La Liga appearances and is considered one of the hottest prospects in Spanish football and the main threat to Man United’s hopes to land Muniain come from both Barcelona and Real Madrid who have both been linked with Muniain for some time now.
Muniain has represented Athletic Bilbao since the age 12 and any move away from the club will be a wrench but the youngster will be more than aware that he is unlikely to fulfill his potential at the San Mames and he may well be considering his options as the team around him do likewise.
Ferguson has had an eye to the future for some time, adopting a youthful transfer policy that has seen the club bring in the likes of David de Gea, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez in recent seasons and over the summer the Man United boss continued in the same vein by nabbing highly rated English teenager Nick Powell and Chilean forward Angelo Henriquez.
It may take a hefty offer to convince Los Leones president Josu Urrutia to sell his prized asset but if the club have not corrected their recent nose dive then financial necessity may force Athletic Bilbao to consider offers for the talented starlet.
Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping that Iker Muniain can be his ‘Next Cristiano Ronaldo’ a youthful attacker who can be the focal point of the club’s attack for years to come and has been guaranteed funds to make such an acquisition a realistic prospect.
Munian is reported to have a €40m (£32m) release clause and given that Man United offered a similar fee for Brazilian Lucas Moura, only to see PSG outbid the Premier League side, it seems plausible that Sir Alex Ferguson will have funds to meet the Athletic Bilbao asking price.
