Check-In to Everton v Liverpool

Liverpool have checked on Celtic striker Gary Hooper as Brendan Rodgers looks to get plans in place to bolster his strikeforce during the January transfer window.

A scouting delegation from Anfield watched Essex-born Hooper, 24, play for Celtic during Tuesday night’s Champions League game in Barcelona, when the Glasgow club slipped to an agonising 2-1 defeat in injury time.

Rodgers is desperate to increase his forward options, as Fabio Borini’s fractured right foot and Andy Carroll’s loan move to West Ham have left Luis Suarez as the club’s only senior striker.

Watching Liverpool scouts would have seen a different side to Gary Hooper’s talents on Tuesday night. Usually the Celtic striker adopts a role at the spearhead of a Bhoys attack that batters SPL sides with wave upon wave of attacks. At the Nou Camp the forward had to play a waiting game which involved a whole lot of running, as well periods of inactivity that he then had to burst out of to help mount speedy counter attacks against a dominant Barcelona side.

It was a job he handled admirably.

24 year old former Scunthorpe United man Hooper has been a big hit since his move to Parkhead two years ago and Bhoys boss Neil Lennon is keen to tie the marksman to a new long term contract but may struggle to do so if a bid from the Anfield side is forthcoming.

Hooper netted 22 goals in his first season in Scotland and fired in 29 last term to help Celtic to an SPL title and he is a player Lennon will fight to keep hold of. There has been talk of a potential England call-up for the Harlow born striker and clearly a high-profile move South of the Border would help in pursuit of international recognition.

Brendan Rodgers urgently needs a striker signing and will surely look to bring in a player in January to support Luis Suarez and the currently injured, and unproven, Fabio Borini. Gary Hooper may be a cost effective way to fill just such a role.
