Old Trafford told to fork out record breaking fee for Colombian international.
Porto have adjusted Manchester United target James Rodriguez’s contract – with a clause inserted which means he can only leave for £38million.
The winger has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and Sir Alex Ferguson was quizzed on him earlier this week.
When asked about him, Ferguson joked: “With regards to James Rodriguez, I hope the news is not true because it costs a fortune to sign a player from FC Porto.”
The Colombia international’s original contract included a £25m release clause and the length of his deal, currently running until 2016, remains the same.
Porto’s move could be seen as a pre-emptive tactic to ensure they get the best possible fee for their star, with United linked with a January move for him.
This source goes on to claim that sources in Portugal are of the opinion that James Rodriguez will one day make a move to Old Trafford but that such a deal may be a year or two in the future.
Clearly Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson would have to think long and hard about paying a club record fee of £38m for the FC Porto youngster, there may be no doubting the 21 year old’s potential and as such Rodriguez has been dubbed ‘The South American Cristiano Ronaldo’, but the Scot may well only consider such a bid if he manages to get a decent price for Nani, the player this source claims would be replaced by the Colombian youngster.
James Rodriguez netted 13 goals in 26 league appearances last term and has continued to impress in both domestic and Champions League action this season.
Nani’s Man United career appears to hang in the balance after 18 months of average form and given that Ferguson can turn to the likes of Luis Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa to fill wide attacking role, there appears a genuine chance that Ferguson would consider offers for the Portuguese international in order to make way for a younger man.
However Ferguson will certainly think twice about meeting such an inflated price tag.
