Emirates Stadium side on alert as Arsene Wenger eyes up prolific marksman.
Arsenal on Karim Benzema alert after Real Madrid hint at Falcao intentions
The Spanish champions are one of several top European sides in the hunt for Atlético Madrid star Radamel Falcao and Benzema could be the man to make-way for the Colombian.
Benzema has started just three league games for Jose Mourinho’s side this season, scoring once, as he has been used in a rotation policy with Gonzalo Higuain, who himself has netted four La Liga goals this term.
It is no secret that Wenger is a long-term admirer of the French international and with summer signing Oliver Giroud yet to find form, Benzema could be the perfect solution and at just 24-years-old, Benzema’s age should soften the blow of the likely high asking price.
Clearly any interest in Karim Benzema would need to entail a bid well in excess of the largest fee Arsenal have ever paid for a new signing but perhaps the situation is such that Arsene Wenger realises that the purchase of a player like Karim Benzema could make or break the club’s future.
Arsenal fans were an angry bunch at the AGM and the Gunners faithful will demand the North London club’s board spend big to help improve a squad that is once again struggling for form.
If Jose Mourinho does make a successful move to sign Colombian Radamel Falcao then there may be an opening for the Gunners boss to exploit. The former Lyon forward spent the best part of two seasons trying to force his way to the head of the Bernabeu striking pecking order and over the course of the past 18 months the powerful forward has become a regular in the club’s starting eleven.
Therefore as this source points out, the pursuit of the Atletico Madrid man may persuade Benzema to look for pastures new and a move to finally link up with Wenger may well be tempting.
Arsenal could well do with another effective attacking option. Having sold Robin Van Persie the North London club do look a little toothless up front.
Wenger’s side have managed just one goal in the past three matches and have drawn blanks against ‘inferior’ opposition including Stoke City, Sunderland and Norwich City.
Wenger doesn’t have a wealth of options and can only call upon summer signing Olivier Giroud and possibly Lukas Podolski and Gervinho, both currently more commonly used in wide attacking roles, to play up front. Marouane Chamakh has little or no future at the North London club. Nicklas Bendtner and Park Chu-Young have been loaned out and Carlos Vela was sold to Real Sociedad.
This had left Wenger with a threadbare attack which would be revitalized by the possible capture of Karim Benzema.
Benzema has scored 70 goals in 145 appearances for Real Madrid since his £33m move to the Spanish capital in the summer of 2009.
