San Siro midfielder top target on Anfield shopping list.
Liverpool have identified unhappy Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder as their top January transfer window target. Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on the 28 year old Dutch international as he looks to bring in an injection of creativity to boost his Anfield squad as they look to mount a genuine assault on the Premier League top four in order to clinch a coveted Champions League berth.
Inter Milan boss Andrea Stramaccioni may well be ready to consider the possibility of selling the former Ajax and Real Madrid man as he has at times opted to name Sneijder on his bench prior to his current minor thigh injury and the Nerazzurri has seen his side manage just fine without the services of the talented playmaker.
The Italian giants sit in third place after five successive wins and therefore may be open to the sale of Sneijder to help balance the books as owner Massimo Moratti counts the cost of missing out on Champions League action this term.
Rodgers will need his board to back his interest in Sneijder with a significant bid worthy of a player of his standing, something Liverpool’s American owners have thus far failed to do, seemingly burned by the experience of handing former boss Kenny Dalglish huge sums only to see the Merseyside club move backwards down the Premier League table.
It will be down to Brendan Rodgers to convince the Liverpool money men that such an addition would not only greatly aid the club’s recovery but would also be a statement of intent and a sign of an outfit ready to re-assert their standing in European football.
Liverpool have struggled for goals this term and whilst a great deal of responsibility for that shortage is down to the fact that Rodgers has a threadbare attack, currently relying on sole fit striker Luis Suarez to provide an end product, but is also due to a need to bring in a central player who can ably link midfield and attack.
Steven Gerrard has shown a reasonable return to form over the past year but is not as advanced a performer as he once was. Nuri Sahin offers a tigerish presence but also doesn’t support the Liverpool attack all too often and this has led to Rodgers showing an interest in a player of real talent who has perhaps lost his way over the past 18 months.
Wesley Sneijder was signed by Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2009 and in his first season at the club he helped the Italian giants to a treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League successes but life at Inter Milan has somewhat nosedived since the ‘Special One’ left for Real Madrid.
