Old Trafford side eye up Borussia Dortmund centre-back.
Italian source CalcioMercato believe that Man United are readying a bid for Borussia Dortmund centre back Neven Subotic. The Serbian international has been compared to compatriot Nemanja Vidic and could well be a player Sir Alex Ferguson looks to bring in order to beef up his back-line.
The 23 year old defender has been a mainstay of Jurgen Klopp’s defence over the past few seasons and has been a key player in Borussia Dortmund’s back to back Bundesliga title successes and as such is unlikely to be a player the Westfalenstadion side will be looking to sell.
However Klopp has been unable to prevent the likes of Nuri Sahin and Shinji Kagawa seeking a move away from the club so could struggle to retain Subotic’s services if a big enough offer was made. This source states Man United’s interest relates to a possible €20m (£16m) bid but such an offer in today’s inflated transfer market would be laughed off.
Ferguson has seen his Man United defence lurch from poor defensive display to the next as injuries to Nemanja Vidic, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have left the Old Trafford side having to on occasion turn to Michael Carrick to act as a makeshift replacement.
Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand have both hit periods of very average form and there is constant speculation surrounding Sir Alex Ferguson’s need to strengthen the Man United defence and Subotic may well be a sensible, if costly, option to consider.
