Check-in to Liverpool v Newcastle United

Liverpool are interested in re-signing former striker Robbie Keane on loan in January, fanatix has learnt.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to evaluate all striking options available to him in January and the Northern Irishman is open to the possibility of bringing in the La Galaxy forward on a short-term deal.

Keane, 32, left Tottenham in summer 2011 to join David Beckham in the US and has become a fan favourite at the Home Depot Arena, bagging 18 goals in 31 appearances in MLS.

The US off-season coincides with the January transfer window and several top European clubs have taken advantage of the MLS stars’ desire to keep up their fitness.

From Alessandro Del Piero to Emile Heskey: Liverpool’s search for striking reinforcements has already seen them linked with a host of good, bad and down-right dreadful strikers, with Robbie Keane the latest star to be mooted for Anfield.

Keane spent six unhappy months at Liverpool under then-boss Rafa Benitez, scoring just five league goals in around 20 appearances and eventually returning to Tottenham at a loss.

Back at White Hart Lane, the diminutive Irishman looked like he had lost the edge that made him such a threat in the Premier League (or perhaps it was his superbly talented strike-partner, Dimitar Berbatov) and, aftear loan spells at Celtic and West Ham, he joined Becks in LA.

MLS is rightly cristicised for being substandard, but Keane has been a big success in California, scoring 18 times in just 31 league matches and generally impressing with his sharpness at the Home Depot Arena.

The 32-year-old also looked excellent during his brief spell at Aston Villa last January, so don’t rule out a return to the Premier League with Liverpool in early 2013.

Brendan Rodgers, as a fellow Irishman (albeit from north of the border), is no doubt aware of Keane’s talents and his availability during the US off-season. The former Swansea boss is reluctant to lose face by recalling Hammers loanee Andy Carroll but is short of funds.

Keane’s intelligence would suit Rodgers’ passing game and he is sure to link up well with the wired Luis Suarez.
