Emirates Stadium side lead chase to nab Bundesliga youngster.
Arsenal are in pole position as they continue their pursuit of Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby according to CalcioMercato.
According to this source the North London club are favourites to sign the 22 year old German international as he sees his current deal run down. In January the battling midfielder will be available on a pre-contract basis as Arsenal look to sign the Schalke man on a free transfer next summer.
There doesn’t seem an urgent need for Arsene Wenger to make an offer to sign Holtby in January as he has a fair few central midfield options in his squad and any interest may be with a view to the summer.
The Gunners do have injury concerns over a number of their midfielders with Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Abou Diaby, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky all experiencing prolonged periods on the sidelines.
It took a while for Holtby to convince Schalke of his ability to make it, spending time out on loan at both Bochum and Mainz, before cementing his place in Huub Stevens’ first team plans.
