Old Trafford side battle Barcelona for German international.
Man United are lining up a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels according to Italian source CalcioMercato but Sir Alex Ferguson will go head to head in pursuit of the German with La Liga giants Barcelona.
23 year old centre-back Hummels has been a defensive rock at the Westfalenstadion side, helping Jurgen Klopp’s side to back to back Bundesliga titles and in the process becoming a regular in the German national team set-up.
Perhaps a less than spectacular start to the campaign will lead to Hummels considering offers from these two footballing heavyweights and arguably both sides are in desperate need of reinforcements. The former Bayern Munich man has seen his side fall some eleven points off the title pace as the Bavarians started the season like a rocket.
Man United have seen Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic spent extended periods out injured whilst Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans have struggled for form.
Barcelona boss has a wealth of attacking options but has hardly any recognised central defenders in his Nou Camp squad, so much so that Argentine battler Javier Mascherano has been forced into a makeshift role at the back for much of the past 18 months.
Tito Vilanova may see Hummels as the ideal complement to add to his first choice pairing of veteran Carles Puyol and accomplished Spanish international Gerard Pique.
This source believes the Borussia Dortmund man can be picked up for a fee of €20m (£16m), which would represent a bargain in today’s inflated transfer market.
