Pirlo nearly joined the Blues.
Italian midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo came so close to joining Chelsea three years ago that he was agreeing personal terms at Stamford Bridge when AC Milan broke off the deal.
Chelsea tabled a bid for the playmaker in the summer of 2009 after manager Carlo Ancelotti left Milan to join the Blues.
The Italian side rejected the offer in a move that both Milan and Pirlo announced was a mutual decision.
But the 33-year-old has now revealed he had no say in the matter and in fact he wanted to join his former manager in England.

What a shame!
There are some players in world football who it’d be a pleasure to watch week-in week-out and Italian pass-master Andrea Pirlo is certainly one of them.
The veteran midfielder has revealed that he came close to joining Chelsea during Carlo Ancelloti’s reign at Stamford Bridge, before AC Milan pulled the plug on the deal.
Chelsea’s loss has ultimately ended-up being Juventus’ gain and ironically Pirlo could come back to haunt the Blues when they travel to Turin on Tuesday night for a crucial Champions League clash with the Old Lady.
Pirlo was at his majestic best when Juve fought from 2-0 down to grab a valuable point at the Bridge in September and the Blues will again face a job stifling the midfield metronome in Italy.
Chelsea, however, have their own young midfielder geniuses in Oscar, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata and if the trio perform to the best of their ability, the holders can be confident of getting one over the man who was nearly one of their own.
