Emirates Stadium side move ahead of Italian suitors as midfield maestro looks set for Bundesliga departure.
CalcioMercato today report that despite interest from Inter Milan and Juventus Arsenal remain in pole position to sign German international Lewis Holtby.
The Schalke midfielder is in the final year of his contract and appears keen on a move to the Premier League and has sufficiently impressed Arsene Wenger to appear high up on the Gunners boss’s wish-list.
The 22 year old impressed in action against the North London club in their Champions League encounters this season and this may well have piqued Wenger’s interest and perhaps a move to land the adaptable midfielder in January will appeal to the Arsenal boss over a scramble to pick up the youngster next summer, when a side more able and willing to make a huge salary could edge the Premier League side.
Though Arsenal have a fair few midfield options it is worth noting that the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Abou Diaby, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky have all suffered with injuries over the past 18 months and the chance to beef up numbers with a cost effective acquisition may well tempt Wenger into action.
