Old Trafford side edge closer to Dutch international signing.
Dutch source Soccernews.nl claim that Man United are closing on PSV Eindhoven midfielder Kevin Strootman and that such a deal is close to completion, so much so that the Eredivisie side has already identified Swedish international Oscar Hiljemark as a replacement for the Dutch youngster.
This source claims that Man United are lining up a €17m (£14m) bid for the 22 year old rangy midfielder who has been a big hit since his move to the Philips Stadion 18 months ago, a move that has helped to secure Strootman’s spot in Louis Van Gaal’s national team set-up.
Sir Alex Ferguson probably feels the need to freshen up his midfield and has been strongly linked with Strootman for some months now.
The Scot has brought in young talents from across Europe, and beyond, as he looks to build for the future but Tom Cleverley aside it could be argued that Man United do lack solid talented options in their midfield for the long haul.
Paul Scholes is clearly nearing the end of his glittering career, Michael Carrick has been a mainstay this term but has arguably not shone. Anderson is manfully trying to salvage his Man United career whilst Darren Fletcher makes early steps back into the first team after a lengthy spell out through illness.
Strootman cost PSV £10m in the summer of 2011 so would probably ask for a higher price for the former Utrecht man than that noted by this source.
