St James’ Park side keen on Spanish forward.
NEWCASTLE are tracking the progress of Spanish striker Rodrigo Moreno Machado, it is believed.
The 21-year-old Brazilian-born Spaniard is currently lighting up the Portuguese Liga with Benfica, having netted four times.
Prior to Benfica, Machado was a Real Madrid trainee and played for the B team, scoring five goals in 18 appearances.
Although he signed a five-year deal with the Portuguese outfit for around £4.8m in 2010, the forward is believed to be keen to spread his wings and test himself at a higher level.
The Magpies already have Papiss Cisse, Demba Ba and Shola Ameobi on the books, but Machado could provide reliable cover as a fourth striker.
This source is perhaps not seeing the bigger picture. One would imagine that Newcastle United’s interest in Rodrigo would be in relation to the possible loss of one of their current first team options, most likely Demba Ba who’s £7.5m release clause is still very much in effect.
The Brazilian born Spanish Under 21 international has had a good season at the Estaidio da Luz, scoring 16 goals in all competitions and sparking speculation of interest from a number of Europe’s ‘elite’ including a number of prospective Premier League suitors.
Rodrigo’s previous spell in England, on loan at Bolton, didn’t go all that well for the Rio born youngster, who managed just one goal from his 20 appearances for the Reebok Stadium side. It is fair to say though that the 21 year old has greatly improved and matured over the past 18 months.
The speedy Benfica attacker can also play in a wide role as well as an orthodox striker and has netted four goals thus far this term.
