Stamford Bridge side very keen on Emirates Stadium contract rebel.
Chelsea will reportedly look to land Arsenal attacker Theo Walcott this January and are ready to offer the England international a bumper contract and a striking role to help lure him to Stamford Bridge.
The 23 year old is in the final year of his contract and is no nearer to agreeing a new deal to stay at the Emirates Stadium and could therefore be sold in January to avoid losing the former Southampton man on a free transfer next summer.
Arsene Wenger elected to freeze Walcott out of starting eleven for the best part of three months but the speedy youngster’s form was such that the Gunners boss was forced to re-think his approach to the contract rebel, selecting him to start for the past two Premier League fixtures.
Rafa Benitez inherits a Chelsea squad that doesn’t have a great many attacking options and with Fernando Torres experiencing another slump in form the Blues are keen to bring in alternatives and Walcott is leading the club’s wish-list as their pursuit of Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao appears to have petered out.
Arsene Wenger will be loathed to lose another of his talents to a Premier League rival but has clearly displayed a willingness to do so in the past and Arsenal’s board may feel that it is prudent to elicit a fee for Walcott in January regardless of whom is paying the price.
Theo Walcott’s return to the first team has still not been in the orthodox striking role he apparently craves and Chelsea are willing to offer the Arsenal man a chance to shine as the sprearhead of the Blues attack.
Walcott has more than proven himself this term in the finishing stakes, netting nine goals in all competitions despite having started just six fixtures.
Arsenal are unwilling to meet Walcott’s £100k a week plus wage demands, which would entail scrapping the North London club’s wage structure, and Chelsea are more than happy to match the player’s financial expectations and a move across the capital may well tempt the Gunners attacker.
