St Mary’s side ready to turn to Italian.
Roberto Di Matteo is favourite to become Southampton manager if Nigel Adkins loses his job, writes the Sunday People.
The Italian was sacked as Chelsea boss this week but is a close friend of Saints executive chairman Nicola Cortese and could be back in work sooner than expected.
Adkins is clinging on to his job following a crucial win over QPR last weekend but has to have a great run of results over the next few weeks to prove his Premier League credentials.
Cortese is trying to remain loyal to Adkins, who worked wonders at lower levels, but cannot afford to put the club’s top-flight status at risk because of the TV revenue that is at stake.

Nigel Adkins may well find himself under a great deal of pressure this term but any decision to sack the Saints boss would be incredibly harsh given that the former Scunthorpe United boss achieved back to back promotions to take the South-Coast side back into the top flight.
However if he was to stand aside then a move to bring Roberto Di Matteo to St Mary’s would be a very intelligent one to make and if as this source states, the Italian is a close friend to Southampton chairman Nicolas Cortese then perhaps such a move could come to fruition.
Many are of the opinion that Di Matteo was axed far too swiftly given that he has guided Chelsea to a maiden Champions League title just months ago but such is the way Roman Abramovich runs the West London club.
