Emirates Stadium side set about resolving lack of effective attacking options.

ARSENAL are set to make a double swoop for Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Juventus forward Alessandro Matri.

Huntelaar had been a long-term target of Liverpool, but he appears to prefer a move to the Emirates.

Matri on the other hand, has seen first-team opportunities hard to come by at the Italian champions this season and is believed to be ‘chomping at the bit’ to leave.

Arsenal have been linked with a myriad of potential striker signings and this source believes that Arsene Wenger is ready to make a move for a pair of forwards to help provide real strength in depth in what has become something of a problem area for the North London side.

Though Olivier Giroud appears to be improving on a game by game basis it’s clear that Arsenal still lack alternatives up front and the Frenchman’s inability to break down a stubborn Aston Villa back-line further displays the need for other options in the final third.

Huntelaar has seen his career resurrected in the Bundesliga after poor spells at Real Madrid and Ajax and the Dutch forward’s record of 70 goals in 97 Schalke appearances speaks for itself. The Daily Mirror believes he could be snapped up for just £6m.

The 28 year old Italian international Alessandro Matri may have finished as Juventus’s top scorer in Serie A action last term, albeit with a fairly sedate total of 10 goals, but he has struggled for a spot in the Turin side’s starting eleven this season with the likes of Mirko Vucinic and Fabio Quagliarella getting the nod ahead of the experienced striker.

Matri moved to Juventus in January 2011 after three and a half years at Cagliari and the former AC Milan forward’s form over the past 18 months has led to five national team caps but his sustained spell outside of the first team picture may well lead the Lombardy born marksman considering his options.

A move to the Premier League may interest the Juventus forward and any move to sign Matri wouldn’t cost the earth.
