Chelsea Ready to Meet £50m Release Clause to Sign Serie A Striker

Stamford Bridge set to make big money offer for in-form forward.

According to Spanish source Fichajes Chelsea are ready, willing and able to meet Napoli striker Edinson Cavani’s €62m (£50m) release clause as the Blues look to strengthen their relatively weak striking options.

The Uruguayan has been a storming success in Serie A and may well be tempted by the chance of a move to Stamford Bridge but any move to do so may well be the death knell for misfiring Spaniard Fernando Torres.

Rafa Benitez will apparently be backed in the January transfer window as Chelsea look to re-ignite their Premier League title challenge, with the domestic prize being all the more important as the West London club’s Champions League ambitions are hanging by a thread following a series of indifferent results in the group stages.

25 year old Cavani impressed greatly at Palermo, where the powerful forward grew to prominence ahead of a deal to move to Naples where he has been in astonishingly consistent form for two and a half years. His goals helped the San Paolo side into the Champions League but the sale of strike partner Ezequiel Lavezzi may well have left the striker considering his options.

Edinson Cavani has racked up 81 goals in 111 appearances for Napoli and has seen his sides mount a genuine title challenge this term, sitting just behind leaders Juventus at present. However owner Aurelio De Laurentiis may have no choice other than to accept a £50m offer if that does indeed trigger the marksman’s release clause and indeed in financial terms it may be a deal he would struggle to refuse in any case.

Napoli paid £14m to sign Cavani so an offer that sees that investment almost quadruple is clearly not one to be sniffed at.
