Anfield side ready offer for Villa Park forward.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is reportedly pursuing Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has been watching with keen interest the ongoing events at Villa Park as the England man continues to be left out of Paul Lambert’s first team set-up.
The Aston Villa manager has opted to remove the 28 year old entirely from his first team squad for recent encounters with Arsenal and Reading, despite the fact that the striker is fully fit. This has led to growing speculation that the Midlands club could be ready to listen to offers for the former Tottenham and Sunderland man.
Rodgers has been informed that he whilst funds will be made available to invest in his Anfield squad he will not be handed anything like the sums handed to predecessor Kenny Dalglish and therefore the Northern Irishman is ready to use former Aston Villa man Stewart Downing as a makeweight in a deal he hopes will secure the signing of Darren Bent.
In many ways Aston Villa and Liverpool face similar issues with the two players in question. Both were bought for huge sums that they will struggle to recoup should they choose to sell. Therefore a swap offer could well be amenable for all parties.
Liverpool spent £20m on the England winger just over 18 months ago and though Downing was a fixture in the first team picture under Dalglish his appearances under Rodgers have been few and far between. Indeed the former Middlesbrough man has found himself filling in as a full-back at times this term and there is certainly a sense that he is not part of the new manager’s plans.
Downing enjoyed two strong seasons at Aston Villa and may well be open to a return to a side that certainly lacks attacking creativity.
Darren Bent may well fill the striking void that exists at Liverpool, where Rodgers has effectively only one recognised effective senior forward in over-worked Uruguayan Luis Suarez. Summer signing Fabio Borini, now injured, is yet to prove himself and youngster Adam Morgan is too raw for regular Premier League action.
Liverpool are ready to use Downing as bait in their pursuit of a proven Premier League forward who just doesn’t appear to figure in Lambert’s plan and it’s an offer that could well persuade the Scot to offload Darren Bent in January.
